In 1829, the operator of the Liverpool-Manchester line organized the Rainhill Trials, where the best locomotive for the route was determined. George Stephenson's Rocket emerged as the winner out of the five locomotives that competed.
Weighing only 4250 kg, this locomotive featured a fire-tube boiler with a blast pipe, ensuring high heat transfer. The boiler measured 1.82 m in length and had a diameter of 1 m. The inclined cylinders drove the pistons, which were coupled to the driving wheels with a diameter of 1.44 m, achieving a speed of 49 kilometers per hour. Due to its characteristics, the Rocket was well-suited for transporting goods and passengers, ushering in a new era in the history of transportation.
