Historical Background:

The church of Sant Joan de Caselles is located on a hill along the N-II road towards France, near Canillo, Andorra. It was first mentioned in 1312 AD during a visit by the archbishop of the parish of Sant Cerni de Canillo. Although little is known about the population of the region at that time, it is believed that the church served as a parish church in the 11th and 12th centuries. During road construction in 1930, human bone remains were discovered, and in 1988, a necropolis with around 30 graves was found near the church’s apse. All the graves were oriented eastward and carved into the rock, dating back to the 11th or 12th century.
