Historical Overview:

The Victoria was a carrack or Nao with three masts, all made from a single piece of wood. The foremast and mainmast were rigged with two square sails each, while the mizzenmast carried a lateen sail. This historical ship type was developed over time by the Portuguese and Spanish.

The Nao Victoria was part of Magellan’s fleet of five ships, which departed Spain on September 20, 1519, with 245 men, aiming to reach the Spice Islands (the Moluccas).

Luis de Mendoza captained the Victoria but was executed on April 1, 1520, in Puerto San Julián following a mutiny. After Magellan's violent death on April 27, 1521, on the Philippine island of Mactan, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command of the Victoria.

On September 6, 1522, the Victoria returned to its home port of Sanlúcar, Spain, in poor condition. Out of the original 245 crew members, only 18 Europeans and four Indians survived to complete the expedition. The first circumnavigation of the world was achieved, taking two years, 11 months, and two weeks.

The Victoria later made two more voyages to Hispaniola but did not return from the second journey and sank in 1527.
