History of the ship San Felipe
The ship, known under various names such as San Felipe, El Real, or Real Felipe, is named after Philip V of Spain, the first king of the Bourbon dynasty in Spain.
This ship was built in 1716 at the shipyards of San Feliú de Gixols. It is a first-class warship with three decks. The design includes a robust construction with double interior and exterior planks, providing great stability to the hull.
According to some historians, the scale of its construction, which required over 4,000 trees, contributed to deforestation in Spain.
With 108 cannons and impressive dimensions of 67 meters in length, 16.5 meters in width, and 12 meters in height, the San Felipe, adorned with majestic sculptures, was an impressive opponent capable of facing any enemy of its time.
Its service began in the Sardinian campaign in October 1717 under the command of fleet chief D. Esteban Mari Centurione. Subsequently, under the leadership of Captain D. Pedro Despoix and fleet chief D. Antonio Gaztañeta e Iturribalzaga, it participated in the Sicilian campaign of 1718.
After fulfilling its mission, the San Felipe was brought to Syracuse and then sent to Mahón, which was under British control. However, a mishap led to a fire and an explosion, completely destroying the San Felipe.
